When we rely on God, we are relying on His sovereign control of our lives. When you think about it, there should be nothing to fear in life. Since God is our light and salvation, there is really nothing that can have power over us, except God. Of course in our daily lives it is difficult not to fear. We are human after all. But God reminds us that it is He who is our strength and the light of our salvation. Therefore, there is nothing that can truly overcome us. We need only realize this fact. We look forward to the day that we realize that all fear has already been removed.
27 The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid (Psalm 27:1)?

5 Lead me in thy truth, and teach me: for thou art the God of my salvation; on thee do I wait all the day (Psalm 25:5).
It is God’s truth that should lead us. Truth is really all about the correct frame of reference. So, am I saying truth is relative, then? Well, no, but I am saying that our recognition of truth is relative. We cannot see what we do not recognize. It is then in the recognition of truth that we come face-to-face with the author of truth. But it is God that draws us to the truth. God is truth and it is from God’s sovereign perspective that we can come to know truth. The Psalmist says that he waits all day on God. The Psalmist is waiting for God to lead and teach him the in the truth. The leading and teaching by God causes salvation to be effective. Salvation is wholly then an action of God. 24 The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. 2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods (Psalm 24:1-2).
We have discussed previously that God’s sovereignty and the idea of ownership should be considered as connected to each other. There is no ambiguity in scripture concerning the identity of the Creator. Yet, many today deny the need for a Creator. Without a Creator there is no one to answer to except ourselves. Either nature or we become the creator. Sovereignty then becomes an extension either of the created world or ourselves. But this is not the reality of life. God in His sovereignty created the earth and all that is in it. We are wholly accountable then to God alone. This, of course, does not give us a license to mistreat the creation but rather we should respect it as the creation of God. 3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake (Psalm 23:3).
The 23rd Psalm is arguably one of the best known in all of scripture. It is also a Psalm about God’s sovereignty. In the third verse of the Psalm, notice that it is God that is doing all the actions. God restores and God leads. We learn that the purpose of God restoring and leading is for His glory. Since it is God that acts on our behalf, it is God that deserves the glory. Additionally, the fact that God chooses to restore and lead should be very comforting to us. It is comforting to know that God loves us. 10 I was cast upon thee from the womb: thou art my God from my mother's belly (Psalm 22:10).
There are multiple passages of scripture that indicate that God knew us before we were born. The sovereignty of God extends from the beginning to the end. God, according to His will and through His gracious actions, is our God even before we know Him. In short, God knows us before we know Him. From the moment of our creation, God in His infinite love and grace is restoring the relationship of the created to the Creator. Our creation is personal, unique, and of God. There are no accidents with God. This is so important because Man as the image bearer of God is of infinite worth. There is tremendous comfort in knowing that God, even before we were aware, is our God. 13 Be thou exalted, Lord, in thine own strength: so will we sing and praise thy power (Psalm 21:13).
The power and strength of God is unlimited. God is the only being that is truly self-reliant and self-sufficient. There is nothing that God needs. God is complete and all-powerful. God is exalted because of who He is; His very essence demands a response. Our response to God should be one of worship and praise. We worship and praise God then as an act of obedience. This obedience should extend into all areas of life. There is no such thing as a part-time or partial worshipper; it requires all of our commitment. Therefore in obedience to God, we praise Him with all of our heart and mind. 19 The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament sheweth his handywork (Psalm 19:1).
Evidence for the sovereignty of God is all around us. The creation, because of the obvious signs of design, is a prime example of evidence for God’s sovereignty. Something that has design always has the marks of the designer. The designer influences that which is created. In the case of God as designer, it is more than just God being the ’prime-mover’, as the scripture states, it is His handiwork. There is special design that is present in the creation: a pattern that is observable, unique and glorious. When you consider the vast universe, or the beauty of night sky, or the grandeur of a sunset and sunrise, the glory of God should become obvious and undeniable. Praise God for His sovereignty as evidenced by the design of His creation. 2 The Lord is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower (Psalm 18:2).
There is no position of weakness when we are under God’s care. There is literally nothing that can come against us. There is nothing before or after God and therefore He is the foundation of creation, and the author of our salvation. Consider these words from Psalm 18: rock, fortress, trust, horn of salvation and high tower. These words are authoritative and permanent in nature. Nothing about God and His sovereignty is either ephemeral or wishy-washy. God is everlasting and decisive. When we trust God, we can rest assured that the trust is well founded and placed. Through Christ, the Lord God is the rock of our salvation. 8 I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved (Psalm 16:8).
God is our strength. It is only through God’s power that we can withstand the challenges that come in this life. We can rely on God when we put Him before us. In other words, when we keep our focus on God, He is our strength. It is then really a matter of priorities, when the priorities of God become our own, we are acting in accordance with His will. There is no surer way to be immovable and steadfast than to have the Lord God walk at our side. When we study His word and pray in His name, He will always be at our side. 7 Thou shalt keep them, O Lord, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever (Psalm 12:7).
God guarantees the preservation of the saints. Inherent in this is the idea that God’s sovereign actions are responsible making sure we are kept. Additionally, this preservation is permanent. Even though this preservation is permanent, because often circumstances in this world may be trying, it can be very difficult to trust that God will keep us. But that is exactly what He does. The promises of God are irrevocable. This should be very comforting to us, for no matter our circumstances, God will provide. |
