The apostle John wrote the Gospel of John. John is often called the beloved apostle. Jesus loved all His true apostles, but John certainly had a special relationship to Christ and he was very close to the Lord. By tradition, John is the only apostle to die a natural death, the rest were martyred. Perhaps this closeness to the Lord afforded John an insight that others may not have possessed. John’s Gospel is full of these insights and is also full of love.
We learn from these verses that Christ was present in the beginning and that He is God. We also learn that all things were created through Christ. He is the author of life and the author of light. We were created through Him and for Him. This should be enormously comforting.
When we are in the light of Christ no spiritual darkness can overtake us. This is also good news. Therefore, we should proclaim that Christ is the light of the world. The world is largely in spiritual darkness and in deep need of the light of Christ. Where there is light there can be no darkness. Those who believe on Christ will never be in spiritual darkness. He is the very Word made flesh, Creator and Redeemer. Rejoice the Creator is the Word.
