10Have we not all one Father? Hath not one God created us? Why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? (Malachi 2: 10)
The author of Malachi is not known for certain. He wrote after the Babylonian exile and he was calling on the religious leaders to be faithful to God. Part of being faithful to God is to be faithful to each other. In this verse, Malachi references the covenant between God and His people. The general form of the covenant is “They shall be my people, and I shall be their God”. We can see this form of covenant all the way back in Genesis 17:7 with the Abrahamic covenant.
The emphasis of this verse is that God as creator made us. We have a common origin. When we deal with each other in a treacherous manner, we are violating God’s covenant. This is because a covenant is a relationship and therefore anything that violates the relationship, breaks the covenant. Faithfulness is a two-way street. We know that God is faithful; the only question is whether we will be faithful. We should be faithful to each other and to God. The Creator is our God.
