25And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 27And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh (Luke 21: 25-28).
The author of the Gospel of Luke was a physician (Colossians 4:14). Luke was also a Gentile, and therefore was an early convert perhaps of the apostle Paul. These verses from Luke are describing the second coming of Christ. This event will include changes and signs within the whole universe: the sun, moon, stars, earth, sea, waves and heaven.
The return of Christ has some clear parallels to the beginning of creation including the control of natural world. All things in the universe respond to the actions of God. He acts and things change. There are likely several reasons that we are told about Christ’s return, and in verse 28 we are seeing a glimpse of at least one of these reasons. We are told to look up since our redemption draws near. Christ’s return will result in the Creation’s ultimate redemption. We should draw near to the redeemer through faith; He has the power over all of creation. He redeems the creation and He also redeems you as an individual. This is good news that we surely should all share with a world that is in need of redeeming. The Creator is redeemer.
