God uses the covenant as a way of ratifying a promise. God promised David an everlasting kingdom. Notice in this Davidic covenant that it is God who accomplishes the actions. God as part of His sovereign selection chose to bring the Messiah into the world through the line of David. Christ in His earthly decent was from the lineage of David. The fulfillment of the Davidic covenant begins with the coming of Christ as king. Christ’s kingdom is an everlasting kingdom. So the promise to David is fulfilled in the birth, life, death, resurrection and everlasting reign of Christ. Christ is the everlasting throne of life, high and lifted up for all generations.
3 I have made a covenant with my chosen, I have sworn unto David my servant, 4 Thy seed will I establish forever, and build up thy throne to all generations (Psalm 89:3-4).

9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name. 10 For thou art great, and doest wondrous things: thou art God alone (Psalm 86:9-10).
God is above all things and is the sovereign creator. There is only one possible proper response to being in the presence of God. That response is to worship. All the nations will one-day worship God. We know from other places in scripture that the not all that bow down to worship God does so with right heart. This is the travesty of ages, since to worship God with all our hearts is do what we were created for in the first-place. We were created to give glory to God. Our God is indeed great and He alone is God. 9 Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. 10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. 11 Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven (Psalm 85:9-11).
It is the will of God to be merciful. Therefore, mercy results from the sovereign actions of God. It is impossible to separate truth and mercy as well. It is important to remember that it is God’s truth that is the standard. It seems that the world often loses sight of the fact that the standard for truth is not our own. The fact is that we would not want our standards to be the truth. The reason our standards would not be desirable is our standards lack true power and true mercy. And it is God, in mercy, who will restore the Creation. The restoration of the Creation will result in peace and the reign of righteousness. This is good news for a world that desperately needs peace and the reign of righteousness. 10 For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. 11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield: the Lord will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly. 12 O Lord of hosts, blessed is the man that trusteth in thee (Psalm 84:10-12).
It is very much to our benefit to be near God. God is the source of our existence and strength. When we acknowledge that God is our strength, we are essentially trusting in God for our destiny. The blessings of God result from the presence God in our lives. There are no greater important actions for us to take than to trust in God and seek to be in His presence. 9 Help us, O God of our salvation, for the glory of thy name: and deliver us, and purge away our sins, for thy name's sake (Psalm 79:9).
While God is gracious because of His goodness, it is not simply just goodness that brings about the grace. God is gracious for His glory and for the sake of His name. The name of God is significant because it represents who God is. Remember that Yahweh means I AM. Therefore when God delivers and saves (purge away our sins) for His name’s sake it means He saves for the sake of His actual identity. God is and therefore He saves. The nature of the sovereign God of all-creation then is to be a deliverer from sin, and, in fact, to be the remover of the sin. So God always provides a path for us to escape sin and most importantly He cleanses us of the sin we actually commit. This is grace and this is good news. 78 Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth (Psalm 78:1).
God’s desire for us is for us to listen to His commands and His words. It is through the word of God that we can gain an understanding of His sovereign will. We are to heed the commands of God for several reasons. One reason is that God is to be obeyed simply because He is God. The second reason is tied to the first, God is glorified when we listen and obey Him. A third reason to heed God’s words and commands is for our own benefit. God, through His commands and words is revealing Himself to us. When God reveals Himself to us, we can follow God. We can rest assured that our ultimate best interests are protected. God’s way, as revealed through His word, leads to our salvation. 13 Thy way, O God, is in the sanctuary: who is so great a God as our God (Psalm 77:13)?
This verse is saying that God’s way is holy. The holiness of God is tied very closely to sovereignty. Holiness is a state of being for God, and sovereignty is a result of the very being of God. We have a very difficult time comprehended exactly what the holiness of God fully means. But to try and put holiness in context, we use words like: great, awesome, glorious, and pure. Added to these words is the idea of extreme reverence. We cannot be in the presence of a holy God on our own accord. We must literally be covered. The good news of the Gospel is that Christ Himself covers us. True God, from true God, begotten not made, one in being with the Father, through Him all things were made: Christ the God-Man our coverer so that we can be in the presence of our holy great God. 8 He shall have dominion also from sea to sea, and from the river unto the ends of the earth (Psalm 72:8).
Psalm 72 appears to be speaking about that second coming of Christ. I encourage you to read it; God will one day again walk on earth. Christ will exercise His dominion during that time. Dominion is sovereignty. Christ’s rule on earth will be characterized by righteousness. The response to the dominion and righteousness of Christ is worship. All people will worship Him as the sovereign ruler and righteous judge. Christ as the fullness of God is worthy of our worship. Worship the King. 71 In thee, O Lord, do I put my trust: let me never be put to confusion (Psalm 71:1).
When we place our trust in God, we are relying on God’s sovereignty in our lives. In essence, we surrender to God. The result of placing trust in God and surrendering to His will is that we will be transformed in the way we think. The transformation of thought produces certainty, and certainty eliminates confusion. God brings order to our lives. In God we trust is even printed on our money. This should be a sign that we as a nation submit to God, for all that we have is a gift from God. But slogans and words are empty if they are not accompanied by a true transformation of the mind, body and soul. Placing trust in God, means placing all things, willingly, under His authority. The key word here is willingly. God has authority regardless of our submission to Him. But we will lose the benefit of understanding and peace when we do not place our whole trust in God. As God has always done, He brings order out of chaos. 16 Hear me, O Lord; for thy lovingkindness is good: turn unto me according to the multitude of thy tender mercies (Psalm 69:16).
When we are in need we all want to have someone to count on, someone that can make us feel secure. The true security that we desire is the security of God. The security provided by God is love. God is love and to be near to God is to be near to infinite love. When you think about it, there is a tremendous amount of comfort in knowing that through God’s mercy we can be near to God. There is no safer place than to be than in the presence of God, when it is God, in His tender mercy, has reached us in love. This is the good news of the Gospel; that God saves us in loving-kindness through His tender mercy. |
