67 God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah (Psalm 67:1).
When God, in His mercy, blesses, he does so in relationship to us. God literally makes His face shine upon us. We are then in the very presence of God. It is not possible to separate God’s mercy from God’s blessing. It is through pure grace that God is merciful and out of His mercy we benefit. We can and should ask for mercy but it is God that grants it. We do have a responsibly though, we too should be merciful. While we cannot earn God’s mercy, by being merciful ourselves we minimize our hypocrisy. It is not congruent for us to ask for God to be merciful when we ourselves are not merciful, gracious and kind.
