12And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: 13Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both (Zechariah 6:12-13).
1Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man (Hebrews 8:1).
Zechariah was a prophet to the southern kingdom of Judah. He had returned to Judah after Babylonian captivity. Zechariah describes the Branch (Messiah) as both a king and a priest. The roles of priest and king together are reminiscent of Melchizedek. You will remember from Genesis that Melchizedek blessed Abraham and Abraham tithed to Melchizedek. Melchizedek was King of Salem (Jerusalem) and priest of God most High. Many theologians regard Melchizedek as the pre-incarnate Christ. Regardless, the concept of king and priest being applied to the Messiah is significant because by possessing both functions the Messiah would be a Godly ruler. We know that Christ is both High Priest and King. He is a priest in the order of Melchizedek and King of the Davidic throne. So Christ, was the sacrifice that atoned for us, intercedes on our behalf, and rules an everlasting kingdom. The prophet Zechariah looked forward in time to the coming of the Priestly King. The author of Hebrews confirms that this is the Lord Jesus Christ.
