16 But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows, 17 And saying, We have piped unto you, and ye have not danced; we have mourned unto you, and ye have not lamented. 18 For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. 19 The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children (Matthew 11:16-19).
The truth is never relative to what people think. The truth simply is. Jesus in this passage draws our attention to the inconsistencies of human thought. These inconsistencies of human thought lead to faulty conclusions. Which leads to the point of this passage, conclusions should be based on the truth, not perception of truth. It is therefore necessary to remove perception from our reflections on the truth. Our perceptions, when it comes to God’s word and God’s ways, simply lead us frequently down the wrong path. In short, hypocrisy is born out of the difference between Man’s perceptions, and God’s desires. God’s desires are truth and this is the very truth that sets us free.
