2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language (Acts 2:2-6).
The day of Pentecost was a profound day in the early church. It is the day promised by Christ in which the gift of Holy Spirit was given. The gift of the Holy Spirit was promised by Christ to be a comforter to each believer. I think the day of Pentecost though also represents the restoration of something lost long ago at the Tower of Babel. If you recall from Genesis that language was confused and the people dispersed due to the sin of pride at Babel. So at Pentecost, the people being able to recognize and understand in their own language the message of God is a sign that God is restoring the relationship between God and Man. God is able through the work of the Holy Spirit in this world to have a people that are one through this same Spirit.
