1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. 2 And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly (Genesis 17:1-2).
God was reminding Abraham of promises that would be fulfilled. God’s form of describing promises and conditions is the covenant. The covenant between God and Abraham is notable for several reasons. This covenant was a covenant between a chosen people and God. The promise though was based on God’s sovereign choice and therefore unmerited. But the covenant was also very personal in that it was between God and Abraham. So the covenant was corporate (between a people), unmerited, and yet deeply personal.
