13 No servant can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon (Luke 16:13).
These words by Christ came as a shock to the religious leaders. They had thought that wealth was a sign of favor from God and that, in the case of the religious leaders who in many cases were wealthy; felt that God privileged them. But Christ knows the heart of people, and the religious leaders were more interested in serving their financial interests than the Kingdom of God. And so, Christ points out the problem with wealth, but it is not just wealth that we can become subservient to, there are a multitude of things that can distract us from serving God. Christ reminds us the serve God.
