16For dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked have enclosed me: they pierced my hands and my feet. 17I may tell all my bones: they look and stare upon me. 18They part my garments among them, and cast lots upon my vesture (Psalm 22:16-18).
25The other disciples therefore said unto him, We have seen the LORD. But he said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe. 26And after eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them: then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, Peace be unto you. 27Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing. 28And Thomas answered and said unto him, My LORD and my God (John 20:25-28).
35And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots (Matthew 27:35).
34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots (Luke 23:34).
24They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did (John 19:24).
Psalm 22 describes the crucifixion of Christ. David wrote this Psalm approximately 1000 years before Christ and over 400 years before crucifixion was even invented. The Gospel accounts in Matthew, Luke and John all confirm that the prophecy from Psalm 22 applies directly to Christ. The fulfillment of this prophecy alone is startling evidence that Christ is the Messiah. The Gospel accounts are both direct and indirect eyewitness accounts of the events in the life of Christ. Matthew and John were direct eyewitnesses and Luke reported others eyewitness testimonies. These men would have known whether the events recorded were true or false. Their accounts would have been falsifiable. And yet even Josephus the Jewish historian (not a Christian) confirms in his writings that the Gospel accounts of the crucifixion are true. Additionally, the Gospel writers endured persecution and even death (all but John were martyred) based on their belief in the truthfulness of what they witnessed. Also, there are no significant inconsistencies in their testimonies. The combination of the veracity of the Gospel writer’s eyewitness testimony and the ultimate fulfillment of a 1000-year-old prophecy should be compelling evidence to all that Christ is the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.
