2But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting (Micah 5:2).
1Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5And they said unto him, In Bethlehem of Judaea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6And thou Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governor, that shall rule my people Israel (Matthew 2:1-6).
Micah was a prophet to the southern kingdom of Judah. He wrote this prophecy concerning the birthplace of the Messiah over 700 years before Christ. We know from the Gospel of Matthew that Christ was born in Bethlehem. Bethlehem was a small town (perhaps under 1000 people) at the time of Christ. So, Christ’s birth occurred in a small town in a relatively obscure part of the world. It seems God wanted to make the details of Messiah’s birth such that it would be impossible for anyone to deny that Christ is the Messiah (and yet many do deny it). Besides the birthplace of the Messiah , there is additionally something very interesting in Micah’s prophecy; the Messiah’s goings forth is from of old and is everlasting. The Messiah is God. Christ is God and was born in Bethlehem. Therefore, there should be no denying Christ as Messiah. The Messiah; born altogether human in Bethlehem is the everlasting I AM; altogether God.
