42 And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom. 43 And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise (Luke 23:42-43).

This is so because it is God that acts to justify the individual. It is credit, a credit of righteousness to the believer. Once this credit is applied, it is effective and permanent. This is the good news of the Gospel.
