1And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; 3And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: 4But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth: with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. 5And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins (Isaiah 11:1-5).
16I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star (Revelation 22:16).
32And John bare record, saying, I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him (John 1:32).
25And needed not that any should testify of man: for he knew what was in man (John 2:25).
23If a man on the sabbath day receive circumcision, that the law of Moses should not be broken; are ye angry at me, because I have made a man every whit whole on the sabbath day? 24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment (John 7:23-24).
8And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: 9Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved (2 Thessalonians 2:8-10).
In these opening verses of the 11th chapter of Isaiah, the qualifications of the Messiah as righteous judge are described. In addition to the qualifications as judge, the lineage is also described. The Messiah is descended from Jesse (David’s father). There are multiple places in the Old Testament where the Messiah is described as being from the House of David (Root of Jesse). In terms of judgment, Isaiah’s prophecy has not yet been completely fulfilled. We know that Christ meets the qualifications of the judge and that His decisions are righteous but the actual judgment by Christ has yet to fully occur. I think sometimes we forget that our Savior in addition to being the redeemer is also the judge. Paradoxically and fortunately, He paid the judicial punishment that we all deserve. It is therefore by His power and His righteousness that we have any hope of withstanding judgment. But no one should want to withstand His judgment without His imputed grace and righteousness; we don’t meet the mark on our own.
