1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God (John 1:1-2).
These opening words from John tell a tremendous amount about Christ. Jesus is God. Jesus is preexistent and eternal. Jesus is Creator (this is reinforced elsewhere in scripture, as well-Colossians 1:16). We would have to throw the entire Gospel of John out in order to deny the deity of Christ. Suffice it to say that Christ was not just your average Galilean. When we put our faith in Christ, we do so in God Himself and this was so from the beginning.
