10The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh come; and unto him shall the gathering of the people be (Genesis 49:10).
14For it is evident that our Lord sprang out of Judah; of which tribe Moses spake nothing concerning priesthood. 15And it is yet far more evident: for that after the similitude of Melchisedec there ariseth another priest, 16Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of an endless life. 17For he testifieth, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec (Hebrews 7:14-17).
This third prophecy from the book of Genesis reveals that the Messiah would be from the tribe of Judah. We know from the Genealogies in Luke and Matthew that Christ’s earthly lineage was indeed from Judah. The passage in Hebrews also confirms that the Christ was from the tribe of Judah. I think sometimes we wonder why all the genealogies and references to genealogies are important. They are important in the case of Messianic prophecies because they provide evidence of identity. Identify is important so that false Messiahs can readily be detected. God made the identity of Christ so very obvious. In the Hebrews passage above we see that Christ is in addition to being descended from Judah, also from a royal priest order. He is from the order of Melchisedec. Melchisedec is a Holy priest, not from human decent (as would be the case if from the Levitical priesthood). Christ is altogether human and altogether God. Christ is undeniably unique and the only One in history to meet all specification from scripture of the Messiah.
