23At the beginning of thy supplications the commandment came forth, and I am come to shew thee; for thou art greatly beloved: therefore understand the matter, and consider the vision. 24Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. 25Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. 26And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined (Daniel 9:23-26).
This is one of the most amazing prophecies within all of scripture. Daniel received a vision describing the coming of the Messiah including possibly the timing. There are a total of 70 weeks described here. We will discuss 69 weeks of 70 here today. A prophetic week is 7 years so there are 490 years in this prophecy. The prophecy states that the Messiah is to be cut off after seven weeks plus three score and two weeks (62) for a total of 69 weeks. 69 weeks is 483 years (69 times 7). The 483 years starts at the issuing of the decree to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem. There are several possible dates for this decree but one of them is one that was received by the prophet Nehemiah. This occurred in 445 B.C. So Messiah was to be cut-off 483 years after the decree. Many believe that there are 360 days in a biblical prophetic year (this is based on text from Genesis and Revelation). If this is so, converting the 483 years to days yields a date for the Messiah to be ‘cutoff- of 32 A.D. Regardless of whether this is a correct understanding of the dates given by Daniel (there are several other interpretations), it is clear that Messiah was to come and he was to come while the Temple still existed; we know that the Temple was destroyed in 70 A.D. The Christ had to come before 70 A.D. We know from multiple passages in the New Testament that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah. Christ came and was crucified for our transgressions and to heal us from our iniquities. Christ reconciles us to God and brings everlasting righteousness. The Prophet Daniel some 600 years before Christ saw the day of coming of the promised Messiah. Praise God.
