1God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, 2Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; 3Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high: 4Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they (Hebrews 1: 1-4).
The author of Hebrews is not known. However, Hebrews has been accepted as Holy Scripture from the very early days of the faith. The epistle addresses several issues including creation, persecution and Christology. The Christology is described in terms of Christ as High Priest on the order of Melchizedek (Hebrews 5,6,7). The order of Melchizedek is one of everlasting righteousness. Therefore, as High Priest, Christ is righteous and everlasting and He intercedes on behalf of all believers.
In the opening verses of Hebrews we are reminded that the world is both created and sustained through Christ. It was God the Father’s good pleasure to have Christ as Creator and Sustainer of the universe. Christ is the brightness of God’s glory and He is the center of the universe. He is to be worshipped by humans and angels alike (verse 4). So, from the epistle to the Hebrews we learn that our Creator sustains us and intercedes on our behalf. We have a Creator that knows the very depths of His creation and upholds it by His glory. The Creator is the brightness of glory.
