The epistle of 1 John was written by the apostle John. In many ways the epistles of John are a continuation of the Gospel of John. A common theme in all of John’s writings is love. In these verses from 1 John, love is again mentioned. In this case it is love between people. This kind of love has existed since the beginning of creation. The love we have between one another is part of what God created. Love was created to foster relationships.
John exhorts us to love one another. The love that comes from the Creator allows for relationships to be strengthened. John contrasts the effect that God’s love has on relationships with the effect that evil has on relationships. Evil is a work of Satan. Satan is contrary to God’s love and Satan is the enemy of both God and God’s people. So we should not be surprised then, if even as we love other people, we become hated. The reason is simple albeit unfortunate; the world under the influence of Satan is in rebellion against the Creator and therefore hates all things related to the Creator, even His love. But we are to love people even if their response is not what we would want. We should love all people out of obedience to our Creator, as this is what He desires. We are only therefore reasonable for our actions not the responses or actions of others. Our Creator will work all things out according to His righteousness. The Creator is righteousness.
