12Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last (Isaiah 48:12).
7Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him: and all kindreds of the earth shall wail because of him. Even so, Amen. 8I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty (Revelation 1:7-8).
17And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last: 18I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death (Revelation 1:17-18).
Isaiah calls Israel to heed the one who is the first and the last. God’s people should listen to His message. We know from Revelation that this is a reference to Christ. The Alpha and Omega is the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, respectively. This reference to Christ confirms that he is God. He is complete from the beginning to the end. Also, Revelation 1:18 confirms Christ’s humanity. Christ is altogether God and altogether Man. The time aspect of this prophecy is important to consider. Christ is without beginning or end. His work then too is from everlasting, unchanging, immutable and complete. The completed work of Christ is the key to victory over death. Trust in the One who is the Alpha and the Omega.
